Microgrid and smart grid are the two terms reverberating in the recent days, in the context of energy generation. As the dependency on electronic gadgets is increasing day-by-day, the need of energy generation is also hiking the demand. Microsoft has been working on smart grids. Before moving further, certain technical terms used in this article are defined here.
Microsoft provides its services with Azure, Power BI and Azure IoT Hub for this project of autonomous grids in collaboration with Agder Energi and Powel. With the help of these Microsoft services, the energy generation sources like solar panels, electric automobiles and smart homes will be able to bridge the gap between energy generation and supply. These services will reduce the cost, time and emission when a new power generation unit is to be built.
The phase of the world is changing very fast and so the need of power does. There are several factors like changing climate, demand and supply of energy resources, increased adoption of distributed energy resources are to be addressed. With all these dynamic factors, it is to be guaranteed that a common man is able to bare the burden. Government should also take necessary action to upgrade and update common civilians to lead an uninterrupted life.
Microsoft's contribution into autonomous grids:
With Microsoft, the energy providers can use the data analysed from the cloud services to improve the efficiency in power generation and distribution. This helps the providers to bridge the gap between power demand and supply.
**The Australia-based start up Evergen came up with the implementation of these services. This idea combines the customer needs based on the analytics collected from Microsoft Azure and the IoT to provide best deal in power consumption to the customer. So that the customer can distribute/use the power efficiently.
**Steffes corporation and Mesh systems, in Hawaii, came up with an innovative idea. This idea is to use sensors and Microsoft Azure to transform smart water heaters into a giant community battery that can store energy and help balance the grid.
**With the project name Energie Koploper, in Herrhugowaard, Microsoft is testing an advanced model of the smart grid, that generates power from the smart household devices.
On the other hand, Microsoft is collaborating with different companies across the globe to continue the research of smart grids.
A group electric sources can be working together, depending upon a main grid (macrogrid) is called a Microgrid. These microgrids can be operated as individual electrical sources, when they are isolated from the macrogrid. In simple words, these are the miniature power grids.
Both the macrogrid and microgrid needs to be restarted during the source switch. The grids that are capable of providing uninterrupted power supply when switching between the microgrid and the macrogrid are called smart grids or autonomous grids.Microsoft is working on the smart grids and have collected many insights to model new efficient system across all every industry possible, including the energy sector. Microsoft has recently launched a new video on how it is working for the autonomous grids in partnership with Agder Energi. Check out the video here! The video illustrates how autonomous grids can help a virtuous feedback loop both for utilities and customers.
