Conduction and types of conduction:

If a medium is capable of transmitting sound, then it is called a sound conductor. The most common conductor we rely upon is air. When a sound is generated from a source, it vibrates the air. When these vibrations are sensed by human ear, the human brain analyses it and we then feel the sound. This is called Air-conduction, as air is the medium carrying the sound vibrations. Through Bone-conduction technology, a user can hear the sound vibrations through the user’s cranium i.e., the skull. In contrast with that of the air-conduction, bone-conduction allows the sound vibrations to be transmitted directly through the user’s body.

Working of Bone-conduction AirPods:

Though Apple is calling them bone-conduction AirPods, they don’t rely completely upon bone-conduction. These AirPods filter the input audio to a high-frequency component and a low-frequency component. A low-frequency compressor is configured to reduce dynamic range of the low-frequency component and an air-conduction transducer is configured such that it converts the high-frequency components into air-vibrations so that these vibrations can be sense by the user. Finally, a bone-conduction transducer is setup to convert the low-frequency component with reduced dynamic range into vibrations in the cranial bone.

The bone-conduction AirPods can produce sound vibrations based up on the portion of the cranium through which the sound is being transmitted. For example, vibrations created by the AirPods through the temporal bones that produces a different sound experience to the user. Sound vibrations can be transmitted through the other parts of the cranium like the nasal bone, sphenoid bone or the jaw bone.

Every technology comes with its own pros and cons. The technology succeeds only if it can over come the most common cons. However, here are the pros and cons of the bone-conduction technology.

Pros of bone-conduction technology:

  • As the vibrations are sensed through bones rather than air, the user still be able to listen to the external sound even with the AirPods in place.
  • Bone-conduction helps people with hearing impairment to grab the most advantage to hear the sounds.
  • This technology is particularly useful where air-conduction is not possible, may be in space.

Cons of bone-conduction technology:

  • This technology doesn’t work fine for high-frequencies, as humans can hear only a range of 20Hz to 20kHz frequencies.
  • As the sound vibrations are transmitted through the bones, high intensity sounds may cause tickling to some times annoying range of vibrations.

Though there are chances that Apple may implement this technology on its smartglasses but AirPods are more likely to get this technology to get into the market. There are various other speculations like Apple is working on hear impaired project. Unless Apple declares, all of these speculations keep mushrooming!

iPhone's single button is what differentiated Apple mobiles from other brand mobiles. With iPhone 8, Apple may ditch this single button and leave the entire front face occupied by the display. As of now, the sigle button on the iPhone's front face also provides fingerprint sensor for security. Based on a recent leak it is expected that security to the next iPhone will be provided with 3D face recognition, instead of fingerprint.

Bloomberg reports say that Apple is now working on the prototype that identifies a face in three dimensions. Also, it is mentioned that Apple may integrate this 3D face recognition technology into the next series of iPhones. Alongside the face recognition, iris scanner may also be a feature available.

If Apple really comes up with this technology, there is no much appreciation. Samsung has introduced Infinite screen with its Galaxy S8. Coincidentally, if Apple introduces iris scanner, it is still old stuff implemented by Samsung in Galaxy S8. Amongst all the devices with fingerprint sensor, Apple seems to be the best response authentication. Apple is trying to keep up this fast response authentication with its face recognition also. Sources say that the prototype of Apple's face recognition technology has a response time less than few hundred milliseconds. The capability of this prototype to recognise the face, even when placed on a flat table is creating an excitement of the next iPhone.

Though Samsung Galaxy S8 is also equipped with face recognition, it recognises in two dimensions only. However, both the so-called path breaking technologies - iris scanning and face recognition were bypassed using a photograph.
However, all these details are speculations and are awaiting for official flagging!

The Taiwanese company Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company(TSMC) is where Apple gets its upstream and downstream modules of iPhone. Another Taiwanese company Simplo Technology deals with the battery supply to the iPhones. Zhen Ding Technology and Kinsus Interconnect Technology deals with the modules of Substrate-Like PCBs(SLP) for all the iPhones. It is known that all these nodes of iPhone supply chain agreed to ramp up the production of iPhone 8 by the 10th anniversary of Apple.
The iPhone 8 series is expected to be released in three variants; one with OLED display and the other two with IPS LCD. Also, there are variations in the display size, measuring to one variant at 4.7 inch and the other two at 5.8 inch. All the three variants are expected to be released with edge-to-edge display, abiding the Apple's alone feature of home button. However, fingerprint sensor will be embedded into all the devices, but behind the device.
The variant with OLED display is expected to feature curved edges just like Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. It is expected that the 4.7 inch variant is based on the build of iPhone 4s rather than its successors. But, the other two variants are expected to be based on the latter builds of iPhone 4s.
Rumours are that all the three variants may sport wireless charging along with the support of USB-C charging port. Coming to the camera, the front-facing camera may come with the 3D sensing technology similar to that of Amazon's Firefly, allowing the user to recognise iris. This time, Apple seems to be adopting Sony's water resistant feature and all the three variants seem to be water resistant. Unlike the predecessors, all the three variants are expected to be coming with Apple's A11 processors of 10nm technology.
The following are the expected features of iPhone 8 series.
  • 4.7 IPS LCD for one variant, 5.8 inch OLED display for other two variants
  • All the variants with A11 processor
  • Water resistant glass body
  • Edge-to-edge display
  • 3D sensing front facing camera and dual rear cameras
  • Wireless charging
  • Bundled Apple Earpods
There are several rumors airing the prices of these models. Here are some of the glances at the designs leaked online.
