Medicine delivery implants for chronic pain management in patients

Medicine delivery implants is the next big thing in Medical technology. These implants eliminates the need of getting medication for long duration of time. Most of the times, the patients do not cooperate in medication, but medication is necessary in certain cases. Hence, to reduce the need of medication, scientists developed the medicine delivery implants.

As of now, the application of these implants is restricted to contraception. Once the outcome of this research is found fruitful, experts are opining to extend the application of these implants to chronic pain management and diabetes control. These implants monitor the levels of sugar in a patient's body and releases insulin whenever the sugar level is out of control. In other words, these medicine delivery implants act like artificial Pancreas for diabetic patients.
In case of pain, we cannot take exact amount of pain killer for any chronic pain. Based on the magnitude of pain, the medicine may be over dose or under dose. With the medicine delivery implants, pain killer to the exact location of the pain can be delivered based on the magnitude of pain. The effect of these implants can be observed in long run, when the over dosage is maintained with the optimized medicine delivery.
These implants can either be permanent or temporary based upon the patient's condition. Once implanted, the functionality of the implant will be monitored by the doctor to provide better treatment. With the help of these implants, the way doctors gain the patient's condition also changes.
Coming to the technical details, these implants are embedded with different sensors connected to a server-like monitor to read the data; it may be either through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. There are no other technical details provided as of now, as still it is under rigorous research.

FDA has approved an implant called Probuphine, which is targeted towards deliver the optimized dosage of buprenorphine for a duration of six months. However, it is to be remembered that not all the drugs can be delivered through implants due to certain limitations of technology with respect to human body. Most recently, PillCam has also been approved by FDA, the pill which recording and monitoring Endoscopy and Colonoscopy of the patient.
