Smart buildings - The next big thing in IoT and technology

Smart - the term that is being "adjected" to every technology starting from phones. Now, it's time to live little smarter with smart building.
Smart buildings - The next big thing in IoT and technology
Let us start with a world out of imagination. Suppose that you wanted to buy groceries and you've ordered online. On the way to home from work, you have to collect it. How does the shopkeeper know that it is you? May be using your mobile number or some ID card. But just imagine, if the grocery shop has a security system that recognises you through face recognition, that would be very comfortable for you, isn't it? Suppose that a way further, you need to fuel your car. You reached the petrol bunk and your car is fuelled, along with a notification of your service, based upon your car usage profile. This helps you maintain the with a longer life. Now, you've reached your home. As long as you enter the parking base, the way to park your car has lit up. After parking, the way to the lift has lit up. After reaching your flat, again, a face recognition mechanism recognises you and unlock the door for you. On the other hand, it sets the room temperature, water heating temperature and maintains the lights and fans at the place you are standing. The same experience can be extrapolated to a complete building.

This kind of imagination is exotic to lead life in such "smart" destination. The imagination is soon going to be reality through the latest technology called Smart Buildings. Suppose that your smart building is connected to a retail store nearby. Through the Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology, the way you use the groceries can be updated to the grocery store, so that you will have no need to visit the grocery store when you're out of stock. The grocery store can simply design a profile of groceries based on your insights and stuff your residence with the groceries list.
This kind of service enables the customers, employees and tenets achieve maximum user experience. In the perspective of businessmen, this helps them maintain a transparent and loyal relationship to the customer. On the other hand, they can directly reach out the customer and created their own impression.

A smart building is a connected space that collects user data based upon daily activities through sensors. This data is uploaded to the cloud for analytics and the user is notified based up on the analytics. Sensors can be outfitted on building equipment such as building information management systems (BIMS), smart lighting, BEMS, facilities management systems, building security systems, elevators, furniture, walls and windows, and more. It is not about automating one system in a building, it’s about making a system of systems that work together to deliver amazing experiences!

IoT plays a major role in the concept of smart buildings. The way the data is stored into the cloud should be robust, yet transparent to the user, and secure. In the case of smart buildings, the data related to the activity patterns of a person are to be gathered and analysed to provide individual experience. Intel has been working effectively from past one year. On 5th October, 2016, Intel has launched the first version of Intel Building Management Platform that supports basic set of protocols for smart buildings. Candi PowerTools is the platform for the management of the cloud for smart building, by Intel. Once, the complete research and implementation is found fruitful, Intel will launch the full-fledged version of Building Management Platform for smart buildings.
A smart building responds to the tenant’s needs in the context of her environment. The building adjusts the air conditioning, heating and lighting, and is connected to community areas and external spaces like parking garages to help the person productively get through the day. - Sunita Shenoy, Director of Products at Intel.
